Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru, located on the central coast of the country, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. It is a cosmopolitan and diverse metropolis that combines a rich colonial history with modernity, art, gastronomy and a vibrant cultural life.
History and Culture:
- Lima was founded on January 18, 1535 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, making it one of the oldest cities in South America.

Mistura: This is the most important gastronomic festival in Peru and one of the most outstanding in Latin America. Organized by the Peruvian Gastronomy Society (Apega), Mistura brings together chefs, producers, restaurants and food lovers to celebrate the country’s culinary diversity. The event includes tastings, master classes, culinary contests, live music and more.
International Music Festival: Lima hosts several music festivals that attract national and international artists. Some of the most prominent festivals are the Vivo x el Rock Festival, which features a wide range of musical genres such as rock, pop, indie and more; and the Lima Jazz Festival, which offers internationally renowned jazz concerts.
Holy Week in Lima: During Holy Week, Lima celebrates various religious and cultural activities. Highlights include religious processions, such as the Señor de los Milagros, one of the largest and most revered in Latin America, which attracts thousands of the faithful and devotees.
Lima International Book Fair: It is one of the most important literary events in Peru, where writers, publishers, booksellers and readers meet. The fair offers book presentations, talks, workshops, children’s activities, autograph signings and more.
National Holidays: In July, Lima celebrates the Peruvian Fiestas Patrias with parades, cultural events, music festivals and traditional food. It is a time of national celebration that highlights Peru’s identity and history.
Lima Festival: Organized by the Municipality of Lima, this festival offers a wide variety of cultural, artistic and sports activities in various parts of the city. It includes concerts, art exhibitions, film screenings, plays, folk dances and more.

Lima’s gastronomy is recognized worldwide for its diversity, exquisiteness and fusion of flavors.
Lima’s gastronomy is a fusion of indigenous, Spanish, African and Asian influences that are reflected in a wide variety of delicious and sophisticated dishes. Some of the most representative dishes of Lima’s gastronomy include:
- Ceviche: One of the most emblematic dishes of Peruvian cuisine, ceviche consists of fresh fish marinated in lime with red onion, chili, cilantro and corn. It is refreshing and full of flavor.
- Causa Limeña: A delicious combination of yellow mashed potatoes seasoned with lime and chili, stuffed with tuna, chicken, seafood or avocado. It is a colorful and tasty dish.
- Lomo Saltado: A dish that fuses Peruvian cuisine with Chinese influences, it consists of chunks of beef sautéed with onion, tomato, aji amarillo and served with french fries and rice.
- Anticuchos: Beef skewers marinated in aji panca bell pepper and spices, grilled and served with potatoes and aji sauce.
- Ají de Gallina: A creamy stew made with shredded chicken breast, ají amarillo, milk, bread and nuts. It is served with white rice and boiled potatoes.
- Cau Cau: A traditional Lima dish made with mondongo (beef tripe), potato and aji amarillo, seasoned with spices and served with rice.
In addition to these traditional dishes, Lima is known for its wide variety of desserts such as suspiro limeño (dulce de leche with meringue), picarón (fried doughnuts with chancaca honey), arroz con leche (rice pudding) and mazamorra morada (purple corn dessert).
